Origins and Traditions of Los Posadas

Abstract

Remembering and commemorating the hardships and overall journey or Joseph and the virgin Mary, Los Posadas is a nine-day celebration leading up to Christmas day. This holiday is believed to have originated in San Agustin Acolman, Mexico and many of the traditions are believed to have been evolved form traditions of Spanish settlers. This holiday has proved to be an important element of Mexican Catholic tradition. While the main events of Los Posadas like reenacting the pilgrimage of Mary and Joseph, breaking a pinata, and singing carols, are common everywhere the holiday is celebrated, specifics vary depending upon region. This site will look into how the traditions of Los Posadas have evolved over time and at the regional distinctions in ceremony including how Los Posadas has transcended the Mexican border and is celebrated in the United States.
